If you’re house hunting in California, one thing becomes clear pretty quickly: you can’t have it all. At least not usually.
The three big factors everyone wrestles with—commute, cost, and community—tend to pull in different directions. Want a quick drive to work? Be ready to pay more or settle for less space. Found a great deal? It might be far from the things (or people) you care about. Dreaming of that cozy, walkable neighborhood? You might need to stretch your budget or compromise on commute.
I’ve helped plenty of buyers through this exact balancing act. Here’s how I recommend thinking through each piece of the puzzle—so you can make a decision that actually fits your life, not just your wishlist.
COMMUTE: THE HIDDEN DAILY COST
Let’s start with the obvious: traffic in California is real. Whether you're in the Bay Area, LA, Orange County, or even parts of San Diego, rush hour can eat up hours of your day.
When commute matters most:
Your job requires you to be in the office most days.
You’ve got little kids at home and want to be there for bedtime.
You value your free time and mental health (and honestly, who doesn’t?).
If this sounds like you, it’s worth prioritizing proximity to work—or at least access to reliable public transit. Even cutting your drive down by 15–20 minutes each way adds up fast.
Tips:
Test-drive your commute during peak hours before making an offer.
Look at transit options—BART, Metro, Caltrain, etc.
Don’t forget: if you're remote now but might be hybrid later, build in that flexibility.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
